Introduction

Shivapuri Nagarjun National park is the newest National park of Nepal established in 2002 and is the ninth national park in Nepal. It is located on the northern fringe of the Kathmandu and it is one of the best place for Trekking in Nepal. It is named after Shivapuri peak of 2732m(8,963 ft) altitude. It is about 159 square kilometer and lies in the districts of Kathmandu, Nuwakot and Sindhupalchowk, adjoining 23 VDC (Village Development Committees).

This park was established in order to protect the main water source of the valley, as well as to protect the 177 species of birds and numbers of rare orchids. It is one of the last woodland left in valley with monkeys, leopards and bears. It is very popular among the local for trekking in Nepal. Especially, people come here for hiking and returns their places on the same day but many tourists visit here in order to trek from Sundarijal- Chisapani- Nagarkot. You can also enjoy snowfall in the winter season on the Shivapuri hill.

How to get to Shivapuri Nagarjun National park?

Shivapuri Nagarjun National park is one of the best National park for trekking in Nepal and has three entry gate in Valley, one near Budhanilkantha and another from Sundarijal and third one near Balaju. The nearest entry point from Ratna Park(Old Bus Park) is Balaju  and from  Budhanilkantha . It is located on the northern fringe of the Kathmandu

  • Old Bus Park – Budhanilkhantha – Shivapuri Nagarjun National park

You can get local bus from Old Bus Park (Ratna Park) to Budhanilkantha. At Budhanilkantha , you can enjoy the one of the oldest temple of God Bishnu called Budhanilkantha temple. From there you need to walk about 30 to 45 minutes (depending upon your walking speed) to reach the Shivapuri Nagarjun National park gate. You can also get private taxi from Budhanilkantha to the National park gate. At the park gate, you need to buy the entry tickets and then just enjoy the beauty of the National park.

  • Old Bus Park Park – Sundarijal – Shivapuri Nagarjun National park

On the other hand, you can get bus from Old Bus park to Sundarijal which takes about 3 hours to reach Sundarijal and walk about 30 min from there to reach the entry gate of the National park.

Note: You should leave for the National park early in the morning before 10 am for easy return to home and to enjoy much time in the park.

  • Ring Road – Balaju (or Macha Pokhari)- Shivapuri Nagarjun National park

The third option is the fastest mean to get to the NP entry gate. You can get bus from any where on the ring road to Balaju (a part of ring road) or Macha Pokhari. From Balaju you should walk to the Bypass road and from Bypass road walk to the NP entry gate through Trishuli Kighway. In overall it takes about 20-30 min walk from Balaju (or Macha Phokhari) to Shivapuri Nagarjun National park.

Note: It takes about 3 hours to reach the Hill from the entry point, so you guys are requested to take at least 3 liters of water per head because you are not going to get any water and food on the hill.

Note:

a. The above fee include tax

b. You are not allowed to enter, use vehicle and  produce noise inside the restricted areas of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park.

c. You are not allowed to make pollution above the limit recommended by the national park.

d. For the tourists trekking from Sundarijal- Chisapani- Nagarkot, They need to buy entry tickets at Sundarijal. On the next day, they need not to buy the entry tickets  while trekking from Chisapani to Nagarkot.

e. There is no entry charge for Children below 10 years and old age people(जेष्ट नागरिक).
